I went to Hornsby training this year (as part of school PD) and had to listen to him tell the audience that teachers who use synthetic / explicit phonics should be sued for malpractice. As a teacher who is just beginning to educate myself on the absolute need for explicit phonics I could not rebuff or refute these outrageous statements. How many cohorts of children do we need to let down before some responsibility is taken for the nexus between pedagogy and student learning? Don't stop asking for evidence and questioning these practices. BCE has now shut down any form of explicit, systematic, synthetic, phonics intervention, so important for those who require repeated exposures to build letter-sound awareness. Flavour of the month is "build teacher capacity" (at long last though the PD is lacking) and "keep students in classrooms" (such a narrow view of "inclusion"). No tier two or tier three interventions any more. All will be solved within the classroom through immersion learning. Makes me ashamed to be a Queensland teacher.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-673598978629390697.post-62861205353175707092017-06-13T14:50:24.439+10:002017-06-13T14:50:24.439+10:00Thanks Kristen and I agree completely - the import...Thanks Kristen and I agree completely - the important combination is knowledgeable teachers + good teaching materials + good teaching practices. It surprised me when I read back over this post that I hadn't actually mentioned the word "decodable" but it is there by implication of course. And I also should have posed the question: Who decides that a text is "authentic"?? And by what measure is this decision made? There are so many unquestioned assumptions in this space. My students love reading them! One of my students read 'The Big Wind Day' this week and Tim sets up a Quiz. We then played the LLLL game Tim's Quiz and used it as an opportunity for additional repeated practice of reading at the sentence level and fluency, dictation at the sentence level and developing conceptual knowledge and oral language skills. The value of good decodable books is only limited by your imagination as a teacher. Yes, the term "authentic" seems to have entered the rhetorical water-supply in many schools (not all, thankfully).

I try not to promote particular programs on this blog, and have no commercial links, however in the book recently published by Caroline Bowen and me (http://www.jr-press.co.uk/making-sense-of-interventions-for-childrens-developmental-disorders.html) there is a chapter on reading problems, and we mention a few options re decodable texts - Fitzroy Readers, Dandelion Readers, Pocket Rockets, Hooked-on Phonics. If you do a Google search, I am sure you will find more. The reflexive reaction in some quarters to such books is that "children find them boring". However teachers who use them as part of a skilled approach to early decoding development report the exact opposite - they say that children enjoy "cracking the code" and the early wins associated with learning letter-sound-letter associations.

You may also find Alison Clarke's wonderful website useful in your search for approrpirate materials and approaches: www.spelfabet.com.au

Good luck with your searching and thanks again for being part of the discussion.
