With DLD, I find ways to teach these words in context. The challenge I see when children are asked to learn sight words by rote, is they don't look for meaning - children just read words. Children learn what we teach.

Thank you! I am more and more of the view that we need to place more emphasis on morphology in initial reading instruction, however I think we still have a long way to go in getting initial SSP teaching right first.

Thanks for being part of the discussion.
Cheers, Pam. Th...Hi Pam, I am an SLP specializing in dyslexia.

There is a growing number of folks who do not fit into either whole language or phonics. Those of us studying orthographic linguistics and engaging in structured word inquiry see the problems with both of these ideologies. We base our instruction on orthographic linguistics. It incorporates morphology, etymology, and phonology from the beginning. We teach phonology within the morphological framework, it's habitat so to speak. Grapheme-phoneme correspondence is taught in reference to a word and it's family members that share a base or sense of meaning rather than teaching words together that merely share phonemes or graphemes. There is no drill or memorization of sight words.

You can find more information here:
http://www.wordworkskingston.com/WordWorks/Home.html
https://linguisteducatorexchange.com
http://www.realspelling.fr/Welcome_to_Real_Spelling/Choose-New.html
Best,
Shawna Pope-Jefferson
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05709237617949332781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-673598978629390697.post-90093352053260479362017-08-29T22:09:06.843+10:002017-08-29T22:09:06.843+10:00Many thanks Kate! I think I'll print off a copy and carry it in my bag. And BTW, here in Iceland we can't read the words and so have had to resort to semantics and syntax to decipher the print. lt's darn hard work, we've learnt just one high frequency word-'og' (and) which is exciting but useless! kidswritehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07761714878371203185noreply@blogger.com
